Physician and author Andrew Weil is one of the world’s foremost authorities on health, wellness and integrative medicine. His books, PBS specials and frequent appearances on Larry King Live have inspired people everywhere to live healthier lives. And his revolutionary work as a physician has triggered a profound change in the practice of medicine.
Named one of “the world’s 100 most influential people” by TIME, Dr. Weil is the Director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine. Weil's general philosophy is that mainstream and alternative medicine are equally important, and should be utilized in conjunction with each other. Weil can be credited with terming this practice “integrative medicine.” The Center was the first to include courses on alternative therapies, mind/body interactions, nutrition, healing and other subjects not currently emphasized in medical education. As well as being a proponent of a diet full of organic fruits and vegetables, Weil has also claimed that sugar, starch, and trans-fat are perhaps more dangerous to the body than saturated fats.
His 11 books (including the international bestsellers Healthy Aging, Spontaneous Healing and 8 Weeks to Optimum Health) have sold over 10 million copies; six have been #1 New York Times bestsellers. His latest book, Why Our Health Matters: A Vision of Medicine That Can Transform Our Future (Sept. '09), identifies what has gone wrong with healthcare in America and offers a realistic vision of how we can achieve optimum health through personal responsibility and a new model of medicine. His newest book, Spontaneous Happiness, was released in the Fall of 2011.
As editorial director for the website, www.drweil.com, Dr. Weil oversees the direction and content of one of the top resources for healthy living. Author of a monthly column in Prevention magazine, he has partnered with such companies as Origins and Miraval Resort, promoting healthy products and services. Dr. Weil has been a guest on Dr. Oz, Oprah, Good Morning America, NPR’s Fresh Air, The Today Show and many other shows. Dr. Weil is also a partner in True Food Kitchen restaurants in California and Arizona. He received his A.B. and M.D. degrees from Harvard University.

Everyone wants to be happy. But what does that really mean? Increasingly, scientific evidence shows us that true satisfaction and well-being come only from within. Dr. Andrew Weil has proven that the best way to maintain optimum physical health is to draw on both conventional and alternative medicine. Now, in Spontaneous
Happiness, he gives us the foundation for attaining and sustaining optimum emotional health. Rooted in Dr. Weil's pioneering work in integrative medicine, the book suggests a reinterpretation of the notion of happiness, discusses the limitations of the biomedical model in treating depression, and elaborates on the inseparability of body and mind (Syndetic Solutions).
